A growing share of product research starts with a question typed into an AI assistant instead of a search box. Someone asks "what is the best tool for X?" and gets a short answer with a few names in it.
If your brand is one of those names, you gain a warm lead. If it is not, you may never learn that the conversation happened. That is why more teams now track AI visibility.
What AI visibility means
AI visibility is how often, and how favourably, AI assistants mention or cite your brand when people ask questions in your market. It is the AI-era counterpart of search ranking. The difference is that there is no single results page. The answer changes with the wording of the question, the assistant and the day.
Why traditional rank tracking is not enough
Rank tracking tells you where a page appears for a keyword. It does not tell you:
- whether an assistant recommends you at all,
- which competitors appear next to you,
- which of your pages it cites as a source,
- whether the description of your product is accurate.
You need to look at the answers themselves.
A simple way to start tracking
- List the questions your buyers ask. Use real phrases from sales calls, support tickets and search queries, such as "best [category] for [audience]" and "[your brand] vs [competitor]".
- Run each question across the assistants you care about. Note whether you are mentioned, in what position and with what wording.
- Record the sources. When an assistant cites a page, write down which one. These are the pages shaping your visibility.
- Repeat on a schedule. Answers drift. A weekly or monthly check shows trends instead of one-off snapshots.
- Compare against competitors. Your share of mentions matters more than a single yes or no.
Doing this by hand works for a handful of questions. It becomes slow once you track dozens.
What improves AI visibility
No one controls what an assistant says, but the same fundamentals that help search also help here:
- Clear, factual pages. State what your product does, who it is for and what it costs in plain language.
- Consistent descriptions. Use the same name and description across your site, listings and profiles.
- Useful, cited content. Original guides and comparisons give assistants something worth quoting.
- Accurate structured data. Markup helps machines understand your pages, but it does not replace good content.
- Corrections. If an assistant gets a fact wrong, find the source it is using and fix it there.
Treat the numbers as estimates
AI answers vary from run to run, so any single result is a sample, not a verdict. Look at patterns over many questions and many runs before you act on them.
